In June 2006 the Conservative Party announced that it would hold an open primary on the American model to select its candidate for Mayor of London in the 2008 Greater London Authority election. Anyone could come forward whether they were a member of the Conservative Party or not and every elector on the Greater London electoral register would have an opportunity to vote in the selection process. In July 2007 the Greater London Conservative Party selected four candidates from a wide field of men and women who had expressed interest in running for Mayor of London over the previous year to run in the primary. The process culminated in a series of hustings held throughout Greater London in September 2007 and the result of the postal ballot was declared at the end of that month. Boris Johnson the Member of Parliament for Henley on Thames was selected as the Conservative Candidate. | more

• Reform City Hall by ceasing to duplicate work already done by the London Boroughs.
• Reduce waste by starting with a zero budget base.
• Reform London’s public services and ensure that they are competently and professionally managed in order to provide better value for money.

WARWICK LIGHTFOOT: COMMITTED TO BETTER QUALITY PUBLIC TRANSPORT

• The Underground and Buses must be made safe and reliable.
• Transport for London to manage its employee relations more professionally in order to tackle strikes and threatened stoppages on the Underground.
• Better value for money from the investment in the underground and real results. So far we have little to show for the billions of pounds spent.
• Better quality bus service. We need to bring back conductors, we need proper ventilation on buses and drivers who drive more safely and with greater consideration for their passengers.

• A greener more energy efficient London.
• Plant more trees and to lay out more parks and playgrounds.
• Local waste management polices that encourage recycling.

• The Olympic Games should ‘showcase’ London to the world.
• The legacy of the Olympic Games should be a an Olympic village that Londoners will be able to use in the future and will be proud of when the games are over.
• The Olympic legacy should include better sports facilities and swimming pools throughout London so that we have a fitter, more active and healthier London.

• The Mayor of London is responsible for promoting public health. The greatest contribution the Mayor can make is to harness the inspiration of the Olympic Games to ensure that everyone young people, middle aged people and older people are more active and enjoy the pleasure of taking a walk or swim, in a greener and cleaner environment where there are more trees.
